How practical is it for wind power to provide electricity for large segments of a city?

I'd be curious about that, too. In Toronto, there's just one large turbine that I know of, while north of the city there's at least a dozen, but I don't know where the power from those is consumed.

I know someone who was powering the lights in their summer cottage with wind power about three decades ago.

There is a specific company in Alberta called Enmax that uses 37 ENERCON turbines that can generate total power output of 80MW which is transferred to over 32000 homes in its jurisdiction.

In order to be practical there are a few factors to meet.First of all there must be a minimum wind speed near the city,to get the turbines going as optimum as they can.Second would be a big area of empty flatland near the city.Third of all it must be a viable and economical.

N.Doe is very correct in his statement in applications of Wind Power. There are many parts of America which can and other parts which cannot use Wind Power simply because it's terrain doesn't allow it to. In Alberta, we have wind power because we are located on a region of flat prairies which are also windy due to the Rocky Mountain presence

After reading these posts, I'm a little surprised that the turbine in Toronto is located where it is.

It's close to the Gardner Expressway, not far from Exhibition Stadium if I remember correctly.
