Stories of green building 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
If you have recently made improvements to your home to make it more energy efficient or if you've built a new home with green in mind, I'd love to hear how it turned out.

What did you do that worked well? How is your investment paying off?

I live in an apartment but I have been trying to go green by conserving my electricity use as well as my fuel consumption

I isolated my walls with a green-friendly material.I now consume less energy on heating during autumn, winter and spring. On summer I use one less fan.It was a pretty substantial investment but it's worth it.I will make up for it in three years.

As far as major renovation projects are concerned, our household has not gone as enthusiastic as some others may but we have done what we can to reduce our impact on the environment while saving a few dollars at the same time.

Some things we have done in our household are
replace existing light bulb with energy efficient halogen light bulbs which save us a few dollars every month
use less heat in the winter simply by adding more _layer_s
in the summer, we have opted not to install an air conditioning system and instead use fans.

I am sure there are much more that we can do, but at least it's a good start to a greener houshold!

We just bought our home and it needs a lot of renovations and updates (which is why we got such a good deal).

Right now we are looking into green options project by project. As soon as spring gets here we will be full steam ahead. Already talked to a roofer who is stopping by with samples of new roofing material and techniques that are environmentally friendly. Not a total living green roof, but pretty close to it.

Hi twocents

Great to see that you are trying to improve your house and using eco friendly roofing. As for renovation, there could also be alot that you may do such as using an eco friendly house paint that is not only environmentally friendly but also lasts longer and reduces risk of releasing toxic fumes.
